Kosé Corp. To Acquire Tarte


Japan-based beauty company Kosé Corporation announced it signed an agreement on March 4, 2014, to acquire Tarte, Inc., a New York-based color cosmetics and skin care brand that specializes in products based on naturally derived ingredients. The majority of the Tarte's sales are in North America, and Kosé is buying a 93.5% stake for $135 million in Tarte in order to help obtain a foothold in the U.S. market. The closing of the acquisition is subject to antitrust clearance in the U.S., as well as other customary closing conditions.
According to the company, Kosé is taking many actions aimed at expanding its overseas operations, part of a theme of "concentrating on growth drivers," which is one of the basic strategies of the company’s current medium-term management plan. Until now, Kosé’s operations outside Japan have been mostly in Asia and the ASEAN region. However, the company is now starting to increase its pace in becoming a more global organization by entering countries where the company does not yet have a presence. Acquiring a well-known North American brand gives Kosé a new source of growth outside Japan that is expected to contribute to achieving the goals of its medium-term management plan.
Tarte sells a line of color cosmetics and skin care products primarily in the U.S. that are made using "high-performance natural ingredients" called “skinvigorating” ingredients, which are derived from natural substances. Tarte's products are sold through premium distribution channels such as Sephora, Ulta and Macy's Impulse, in addition to on Tarte's own website and on TV through QVC. Tarte's cosmetics and skin care products are very popular among women in their 20s and 30s, and sales have grown consistently since Tarte began operations in 1999. The company has a solid position in the cosmetics and skin care industry.
By acquiring Tarte, Kosé plans to heighten its stature in North America while continuing to expand overseas operations and add new sales channels and customers. Looking ahead, Kosé plans to close the acquisition of Tarte stock in April 2014, so this acquisition will not affect Kosé’s consolidated results of operations in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2014.

Spotted! Collection Privee by Colour Riche L'Oreal Paris (Eyes, Lips, Nails)

While running through Meijer today, I spotted the new Collection Privee by Colour Riche L'Oreal Paris. The collection includes eye shadow quads, lip sticks, and nail polishes. I know there were 6 lip stick and 6 nail polish shades, and I'm assuming there are 6 eye shadow quads, but I can't recall that for certain. I picked up several pieces, and below are some quick product shots. This collection was released in the UK and Canada a while back, but in looking at some posts from their release, we seem to have some different shades here in the US.

Quick Swatches! Lancome Lip Lover for Sephora VIB Rouge


I just received an eMail from Sephora for early access and a free mini of the new Lancome Lip Lover glosses. Below is a very quick look at the 3 shades I ordered from Lancome's site last week. I haven't taken them out of the box until now, so I apologize for not being prepared to do a proper review yet.


The shades from left to right are Framboise Etoile, Orange Manege (a must-have for Summer!), and Beige Adage. I put one on just a bit ago, and the first impression is that while they're a thicker gloss, they feel very comfortable, moisturizing, and don't have a sticky feeling. I'll be able to publish a proper review after I've spent a little more time with these beauties. I'm a little skeptical about the "provides up to eight hours of moisture", but we'll see. There are 14 shades available, and below please find additional information from Sephora's web site:

Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster

Clarins is a brand I've been rediscovering lately, and today I have a look at one of their newest products, Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster. My face is always in need of a sun-kissed look this time of year, but I generally don't care for the way they feel on my skin, and often the color is slighty unnatural. So I was pleasantly surprised by the results I obtained from this product.


Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster retails for $30.00, and the 0.5 fl. oz. glass bottle presents itself nicely in a little box that slides out of the main packaging sleeve. Also enclosed is a detailed instruction card, along with the standard product sheet.


From the Clarins web site: First-ever self tanning innovation! Just 3 drops, added to your day and/or night moisturizer, warm the complexion with a sun-kissed glow—for a healthy look, all year long. Clarins' exclusive 99.8% natural formula promotes perfectly natural, even results. All that, plus the benefits of your daily skin care. The amber fluid is fairly thin, and you are instructed to add and blend 3 drops to your moisturizer in the palm of your hand, then apply your moisturizer as you normally do. This can be done in the morning and/or at night. The base of the bottle has a soft plastic area that you gently push to accurately dispense just the right amount of product. At the rate I'm using this daily, I expect this bottle will easily last more than 3 months.


How to apply from Clarins web site: Three drops, mixed with your day or night cream, creates a radiant, sun-kissed glow.

STEP 1: Dispense any day/night moisturizer into the palm of your hand. 
STEP 2: Turn the bottle upside down. Press the base and dispense 3 drops into your moisturizer. 
STEP 3: Mix well with moisturizer in the palms of your hands. 
STEP 4: Apply evenly to your face, neck and décolleté. 
STEP 5: Wash hands thoroughly and immediately after application.



Ingredients from the box are shown above, and the Clarins web site information regarding ingredients is below:

"Golden Glow Booster's 99.8% natural formula combines natural DHA and erythrulose, with Aloe Vera extract, to help preserve skin's softness—while giving your complexion a healthy-looking glow."

I find this product enjoyable to use, as it has no real scent, it definitely gives me a healthy glow, and I don't notice any feeling on my skin when mixed with my moisturizer, as opposed to a sticky, tightening feeling I've gotten from other "self-tanning" products. The color is very natural, and because it's buildable, I can adjust my usage to achieve just the right amount of color for a natural, radiant glow.

Initially, I was using it just in the morning, and while a noticed a very slight bronzing effect, it wasn't satisfactory to me. I then began using it in the morning and at night, and I quickly (2 days) saw my expectations met. I now use this just once a day, sometimes skipping a day here and there, and I'm able to maintain exactly the color I was looking for. It's very natural looking, and the color has absolutely no orange tone to it.

I'll be reviewing more of my Clarins purchases soon, and I'm looking forward to the Summer collection after seeing a few pictures online. You can view the Colours of Brazil Summer Collection here. Clarins has always been a solid brand with a great reputation in the industry, but I imagine their sales will surge even more after the fame it's HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm received following the mention from Lupita Nyong'o at the Oscars!
