Chanel Riva: Buy it at $39 or dupe it?

Chanel's Riva is scheduled for a December 1 release, although the rumor mill is saying that it's already sold out. While I don't quite understand that--how can it hit boutiques and counters if it's already sold out--I guess we'll have to wait and see on that. The retail price on Riva is $39.00. Which leads me to ask, why? With a standard retail price of $23.00, has any reason been given for this huge price increase? Are all of their polishes going to reflect this price in 2011? If anyone has heard the reason, let us know!

I have read several articles regarding a price increase on their bags, and one sales associate was quoted as saying "We don't want Chanel to become like Louis Vuitton. They are taking more of an Hermes approach where it can take three years to get the bag you like," she said. "We want Chanel to stay a lux item and not be Main Street."* Perhaps that reasoning extends to their cosmetics line as well, if it's true.

This brings me to my next question...will you be purchasing Riva? Never say never, but I doubt that I will. Partially because of the price, but mainly because although I think it's a lovely color, the shade doesn't seem all that extraordinary to me. Nylon Magazine offered a dupe recipe for Riva that consists of six parts of an opaque white polish, two parts of Brucci Bert's Blue, and one part of Sally Hansen's Xtreme Wear's Blue Me Away. I have no doubt that many of you, with your dedication and talent for Frankening, will be able to come extremely close to this shade.

  1. it's way too expensive and to be honest, it's not all that great of a color, either.
I'm sure that for some people it's affordable, but not for me so I won't be purchasing it any time soon.

  2. $39 is ridiculous. I've never purchased a Chanel polish, I think they are highly over rated and every review I read mentions some negative point of them. Plus, most of them have dupes. If the attitude they want is for their products to be "lux" items no one can afford than than let's do just that- not buy them.

  3. 39?Thats crazy, its just nail polish! The color is ok,but nothing I would give that much money for. With millions of other brands I am sure that I can find a great dupe for this and a low cost one:)
    Great blog!
    Love and kisses:***

  4. Sheesh. For $39, it better do my laundry AND my dishes! That's a tad ridiculous for a color that doesn't wow me.

If Chanel is insistent their products staying "lux," they can keep them. They ought to be grateful that, in this economy, there are people still willing to pay $23 for their polishes.

  5. That is really a crazy price for any polish. I can't think of any shade or finish for my nails that would make me pay that amount. What could possibly be in that polish to make the price so ridiculous. Maybe if my nails were coated in diamonds than I might pay the price. I wouldn't but than I would understand the price. I have complete faith in my fellow polish fanatics that they will come up with a dupe or receipe. Thanks for letting up know about this.

  6. $39 is straight up TOO MUCH. Especially for a color (pastel blue) that's been trendy as of late. Many companies have brought out various shades of pastel blues, so it's not incredibly unusual like some of the other Chanel limited edition colors.

Anyway, I'll definitely give Frankening this color a try. Really, I doubt I would pay the ordinary $23 for this color.

  7. so, I'm sorry if I offend someone but come on! 39 for a freaking nailpolish? that's just stupid. If chanel doesn't want to be "mainstream" then why do they come out with a color that is obviously already mainstream (there's tons of light aqua blues out there) maybe none exactly the same but still, they're not the first person to think of blue nails for crying out loud.

  8. and trust me, i love nailpolish as much as anyone who reads 10+ blogs dedicated to nails, but I wouldn't pay that much for just ONE polish.

  9. I will definitely not be buying this...Chanel's ordinary prices are pushing it, but I completely refuse to pay $39 for one bottle of nail polish. Ridiculous.

  10. I'm glad you mentioned Nylon Magazine's dupe. At the same time I realize many people will still want to buy this polish even though it has an atrocious price tag, but I read on an online magazine from a woman that must have had a sample of some sort, that it was made to be a sheer-er version of Chanel's Nouvelle Vague - that at two coats you still have clearly seen VNL. The promo pics on the model must be layered over white, then?

  11. I won't ever buy a 39$ polish, whatever the brand... But if I love the color, I'll try to find a dupe.

  12. That's a ridiculous price, for a nail polish that doesn't look interesting to me at all. It's kinda boring, not innovative at all. For that price I would buy a couple of Ciaté or Illamaqua polishes in a nice, rich colour.

  13. The color is so not me, so I wouldn't pay $3, let alone $39, for this. It looks like it would be really sheer (I doubt that it is; it just has that look in my opinion).

  14. This was mentioned on NB yesterday. Someone called Chanel CS and they said $27 and it is released Nov 15. And there is a recipe to dupe it =)

  15. No way $39!!! (That's a lot of China Glaze, OPI or Orly to me...) I will wait for swatches and if I like I will dupe it!

  16. I still haven't sprung for any of Chanel polishes and this definitely won't encourage me to. I do like the colors of several of their polishes but have resisted the tempation so far.

  17. If Chanel wants to stay "lux", then they should sell just luxury polishes, maybe with gold leaves in them... Then maybe $39 would be justified.
    Maybe.

  18. I'm a nail polish lover as all we are and I respect nail polishes and the people who make them but 39.00$?? I'm not here to ofend anyone but it's still just a nail polish, it's not worth 39$! Actually I think that more than 5€ for a nail polish is already absurd! It's a tiny bottle with varnish that we can actually even find cheaper dupes! So... what's the big deal of making nail polishes expensive??? And that goes for other stuff too!

    ReplyDelete
  19. $39.00??? Not in this bloody lifetime. Chanel can kiss my mainstream arse.

    Bring on the dupes!

  20. that price is absolutely ridiculous.

  21. I totally agree with Ice Queen ^_^.

  22. $39 is ridiculous! Chanel polish is already expensive, but it's just polish, not a necklace, fabulous dinner date or a show...it's POLISH! Hope you are having a great weekend! Kori xoxo

  23. On to the next one ....Chanel is bugging!

  24. Um, that's a few bucks lower than my total bill (including shipping) when I bought 10 polishes at Zoya's BOGO a few days ago.

I will NEVER pay that much for nail polish. I sway, DUPE it if that color is something you can't live without.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would never spend that much money on a single nail polish.. dupe absolutely!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Weh??? So expensive....I can buy many polishes of different colors with that amount.....

    ReplyDelete
  27. Why all this misinformation re: the price? and for those who don't franken, there are SO many pale blues on the market right now. A very good dupe would be Icing True Blue; it has a great creme-jelly formula and applies very smoothly.

  28. I heard $27 also. Not sure where the $39 number is coming from?

    ReplyDelete
  29. $39!?!?!?!?! Insane much!? I will say this yes its a pretty color, price not so pretty. I never have bought a chanel nor will I. I think it's just too crazy to spend that much one polish, where I can buy lots of polishes for that price. That's just me though.

  30. ~All~I'll just respond with a general comment to everyone, because there's lots of comments! It seems that we're all feeling about the same toward this shade and the price. Nothing all that special and such a high price. As far as the $39 price, I've read that on many blogs and also on what I thought were reputable web sites. I'm now hearing through some of the comments and other sources that it may not be that high, rather $27. A little higher than their normal pricing, but definitely much less than $39. I still wouldn't but it because I don't find it all that unique. As far as Chanel supposedly setting higher prices to remain a lux brand--if true, they have a right to do that. I personally don't have but a handful of Chanel products, all cosmetics. I'll admit that I'm sure some of the allure to me is in the name, although most of the products I have are of better quality than lower priced brands. Not all, but most :) Thanks for all of the comments, interesting to read!

  31. What a load of elitist BS! The attitude is off putting. I'd rather buy some Nails Inc or RBL, if I want high end, great nail lacquer. That color doesn't look too special to me. I don't own any Chanel and I don't plan on it, either.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I read somewhere that the price increase was a rumor...at least I hope it is! I say dupe it, pics of it don't looks THAT unique! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jackie S, you could have it right. Rumor goes out it's $39.00 and suddenly $27.00 seems a bargain! Or maybe more reasonable. I'll stick with RBL for a luxe formula and China Glaze for affordable, but nice, quality.

  34. Good Lord. Go to Sephora, buy the Sephora OPI polish Havana Dreams. It's identical minus the slight shimmer, has been out for months and is only $9 bucks. Chanel isn't that original.

  35. Just thought I'd let everyone know that Riva is on Chanel's website now and it's price isn't the ghastly $39 but $27. Much more affordable!

  36. The re-release of Hard Candy Sky killed any desire for me to have the Chanel. Can't wait to see some comparison swatches of Riva with other polishes - it seems like a common color to me.

  37. I was able to snag some of the Riva early on. I've got some pics and a review up at http://lacquerwear.com/polish-reviews/chanel-riva-from-the-collection-cote-dazur-swatch-and-review/ . I'm enjoying it - a very nice understated winter color.
