Old School Week: Sally Hansen Magical Nail Makeup
This week I'll be highlighting some of my older polishes, and first up is Sally Hansen's Magical Nail Makeup polishes. I only have two of these and I believe this line was my first foray into the much-loved holo polishes made more popular of late by the OPI Designer Series and some of the NFU-Oh polishes. The quality of the formula on these is not nearly as nice as the OPI and Nfu brands, but for "back in the day", these were as good as it got. The formula itself isn't too bad, but I always need to be aware that these require a much lighter touch or less pressure on the brush, or you'll end up with dark grey streaks. I used three coats on these and photographed them in various lighting.

I find they get less streaks in them if you shake them up quite a bit during the application, but they don't give me the even coverage that OPI and Nfu do with fewer coats. I love the holographic color bands on the bottles and I think Sally should figure out a way to incorporate that look into a nail polish.
Do you have any polishes from this line? How do you think they compare to OPI Designer Series and Nfu holographic polishes?
holy wow, those are gorgeous! I'm gonna have to look for these next time I'm searching evilbay for polish!
ReplyDeleteOMG!!!!! I looove these! How I wish I could have them... :D Great swatches. I think they are very very close to Nfu-OHs! <3
ReplyDeletevery pretty and retro :D
ReplyDeleteI have Fairy Dust and it is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI think I have all of these and I got them by accident about 8 years ago. I got 2 bags of old Sally Hansen nail polishes for $3 a bag in a discount store, and they were filled with these and all the duochrome ones. Thus began the hoarding :)
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I love seeing people's old polishes.
ReplyDeleteHow I wish I owned at least one of these awesome oldies.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!

When these came out I had the silver one, and later threw it out...I am so sick I did that! >:P
ReplyDeleteThis one is so pretty!
woooow jaw drops.. might try to find that peachy one.. copper cauldron... so nice
ReplyDeleteI have several of these: Fairy Dust, Crystal Ball (the silver one), Copper Cauldron, Magical Magenta, Mystical Mandarin, and I had Blue Aura and the purple one (forget the name) for a while (gave them to my friends' kids one year when they were visiting - the kids were thrilled!!)
ReplyDeleteThese polishes aren't as durable as the China Glaze OMG holograms, nor as finely-textured as the OPI Designer series. That said...they are absolutely gorgeous!! My biggest problem was finding a top coat that protected the polish from dings and scratches, but didn't mute the holographic effect.
I love shiny things! You'd think that with bottles like these they would've caught my eyes. And I agree, having a polish that looks like the label would be FAB!
ReplyDeleteMan, I don't even remember seeing these. I must have been whacked or something. I love, LOVE those over-the-top sparkles!!!!
ReplyDeleteThose are gorgeous!! I love Fairy Dust! :D
ReplyDeleteooh! they look so pretty! I wanna find them now! :)
ReplyDeleteI have Blue Aura and I love it sooo so much even though it is my most chiptastic polish. Still, so pretty and great holo effect in the blue.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful O__________O
ReplyDeleteso gorgeous, i love sally hansen nail polishes
ReplyDeleteI had no idea these existed. They were very innovative. I love China Glaze & OPI's holo. I don't own any of the Nfu-Oh's. These are beautiful to look at.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying so hard to think where I was in 2002 or so and I can't remember really but one thing I know for sure, I wasn't into nail polishes then. Too bad cause I would've picked these babies up!
ReplyDeleteit's magical like unicorns!

ReplyDeleteThank you for showing these! Now I want them all even more than I did before. I have 3 currently (Copper Cauldron, Blue Aura, and Mystical Mandarin). I bought them on eBay for about $4 each, so it was definitely worth it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know these, but they are very nice!
